It's settled! The theme of "World Seafarers Day" in 2024 is officially released

The IMO recently announced on its official website that the theme for World Seafarers Day 2024 will be "Safety Tips At Sea", which aligns with the world maritime theme "Leading the Future: Safety First!", focusing on the contributions of seafarers to safer workplaces in the shipping industry.

Since the establishment of the Maritime Organization in 1948, safety has been at the core of all its activities. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is actively working to adapt to the changes required by emerging technologies and innovations, and regulatory frameworks are constantly evolving. A prominent example is the target based autonomous surface vessel rules (MASS Code) currently being developed. 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the SOLAS Convention in 1974, which is an important treaty of the International Maritime Organization regulating maritime safety. The theme of World Maritime Day in 2024 is "Leading the Future: Safety First!".

On June 25, 2010, the International Maritime Organization held a diplomatic conference of the contracting parties to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention) in Manila, Philippines. The conference decided to name June 25 as World Seafarers Day, encouraging governments and shipping organizations to pay tribute to seafarers and thank them for their contributions to humanity and the world. The establishment of World Seafarers Day aims to enable all sectors of society to pay long-term attention to the outstanding contributions of seafarers to international maritime trade and economic development, take measures to effectively safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of seafarers, and encourage more ambitious young people to engage in the maritime industry. This year is the 14th World Seamen's Day, and the first 13 events have the following themes:

1. 2011- "Thank you, sailor!"

2. 2012- "You come with the sea, gratitude is with you!"

3. 2013- "Sea Face"

4. 2014- "The sailor brought me..."

5. 2015- "The Career of Seafarers"

6. 2016- "Sailing for the World"

7. 2017- "Seafarers are important"

8. 2018- "Happy Sailor"

9. 2019- "Gender Equality in Ship Work"

10. 2020- "Seafarers are key workers"

11. 2021- "Creating a Fair Future for Seafarers"

12. 2022- "Voyage - Past and Present, Share Your Journey Story"
